CHRONOGRAPHIES

by Jean-Michel BOUHOURS
1982 / 16mm / color / silent / 1S / 17' 00

Jean-Michel Bouhours' work is based at the confluence of photography, painting and film. Each material determines and is determined by the others. Photography and painting enter into a relationship of support and masks; photography is worked in sequences as in cinema, cinema is related to its photographic base: the photogram; painting is animated by the film support, the apparent movement is produced by chromatic variations. This last report takes on greater importance in the last two works.
However, cinema brings photography and painting into its movement, giving them its dynamics. Although the cinematographic movement, in J.-M. Bouhours' work, is that of variation and repetition, photographic and pictorial, it is it that is analyzed, "recomposed" - this analysis using the fixed elements of photography and painting. This is reflected in the film on Marey and CHRONOGRAPHIES, whose creative process is as follows: film sequences, photographic sequences from the first ones, pictorial additions and masks, cinematographic recomposition." - Prosper Hillairet.

Chronography: At the time of the making of this film, I had given this title, thinking I was making a neologism: kronos and graphein, or the inscription of time. It was only 36 years later, at random, from a reading on the pre-Socratics, about Eusebius of Caesarea, that I discovered that the word existed in the dictionary and that it came from the Greek and referred to a kind of narrative year by year, falling between the chronology (short) and the annals

The film, originally silent, also exists in a version accompanied with music composed by Jean-Philippe Feiss in 2020.
