TALKING IN NEW YORK

     (After Jacques Derrida)

by Takahiko IIMURA

1981-2001 / VHS or Mini DV / n&b / 8' 00

A sentence by Jacques Derrida, which he calls «The phenomenological essence of this operation,» is that «I hear myself at the same time than i speak»
I uttered the sentence in English and Japanese at various out and indoor locations in New York with voice or without voice (inner voice). The picture was recorded with synchronized or desynchronized sound which separates the sound from the picture.
The quoted sentence was also switched to «I speak to myself at the same time that I hear,» and by connecting the two both become and endless sentence like a palindrome: «I hear myself at the same time that I speak to myself at the same time that I hear.»
The monologue and the dialogue cross each other in images, and words in images , and words in English and Japanese which are spoken as well as superimposed over the picture. A multicultural experiment in languageis realized for the audio/visual cross over. (T.I.)
