A personal view of London’s underground train network. The daily spectacle of captured by superimposition and perfected by the removal of excess communication – the advertising and graffiti – by painting on the negative. An idealised, lyrical view of the off-peak experience, is then contrasted with the urgency of rush-hour commuting as the film strengthens its grip on description. Removing language and colour makes it both more universal, by removing the branding, and more specific, by elevating the background sounds and the movement of light – highlighting the signatures of place. It is the outcome of a protracted 7-year process of accretion and reflection.
