Francien van Everdingen is one of just a few people to work with an optical printer, a rare, large and expensive machine from the beginning of the 20th century. The result? Almost surreal, wonderful imagery. How diverse the movies may be in terms of choice of subject or technique, they share a universe entirely their own. A universe Francien VAN EVERDINGEN seems to hold the patent for. The titles of her films vary from ‘Bloemschikken’(Arranging flowers) with the description ‘horror with flowers’ to ‘Nook & Cranny’, described as “a moving painting of an interior in which the furniture wants to break out of the egg like a chicken, or a mouse slipping away”.
