Patrimonial collections of contemporary film and video work are in a constant state of evolution; they are not as widely diffused as collections of the more classic works of cinema and require more specific contextualization, both with regard to their appropriation by the general public and to facilitate their study, programming and utilization by moving image professionals.

The Ministère de la culture et de la communication has been supportive of this area of creative endeavour; digitization funding was made available for specific projects in 2005 and 2008, making it possible for a number of organization working in the sector to digitize a selection of their audiovisual collections, which they subsequently made available online.
