notes INSTRUCTIONS FOR A CINEMA SCREENING

The work consists of two separete 60 meter 16mm reels which are identical, but reel “A” is positive and reel “B” negative. At the beginning, the images are projected side by side with two projectors. At duration 1:30 the images start to move towards the center of the screen. This slow movement of the images should take about 60 seconds and should be done manually by panning the projectors. At about 2:30 the images should be superimposing each other completely.

It is critical that the projectors run at exactly the same speed. Even projectors from the same manufacturer and the same type often run at slightly different speeds. The offset cumulated during the 6 minute screening should be maximum 10-15 frames.

The negative image should be on the left side at the beginning. If there is a difference in the running speeds of the projectors, it’s good to put the slower projector on the left side with the negative image. This way the positive image runs faster. There are parts in the positive image, which are almost completely dark, where, if necessary, it’s possible to stop the projector briefly to compensate for the offset cumulated.

Sound from the left projector should be panned to the left side; sound from the right projector should be panned to the right side of the cinema. It’s good to have two people available for the projection, one for each projector.

We often use “bearing plates” under the projectors to enable smooth movement of the projectors – they are available and we can ship them with the prints.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

The work consists of two separate 60 meter film loops which are identical, but reel “A” is positive and reel “B” is negative. They are projected on top of each other with a slight, 3-5 frame offset.

Critical to the succesfull instalment of the work are the 16mm projectors. Even projectors from the same manufacturer and the same type often run on slightly different speeds, and their running speed varies during the day (the faster projector may slow down when heating etc.). The offset cumulated on the 60 meter loop is ideally max. 5-10 frames. It's not critical that the projectors run at a certain speed – they should run at the same speed with each other. The lamps of the projectors should be replaced at the beginning of the installation to make sure they are identical in brightness and colour.

At least one company rents a two-projector set, where the projectors are mechanically connected, enabling an exact synchronization – this is the best solution for the installation. Kinotar can help you to get in contact with this company.

Loop plates are also necessary. When installing the work, it’s good to run it through the projectors a few times to make sure the synchronization holds. If the projectors cumulate an offset which is the same for every test run, it’s possible to edit the reel on the slower projector from the end leader to compensate for the offset.

Both reels have identical soundtracks. The sound of the left projector should be on the left loudspeaker and the sound from the right projector on the right loudspeaker.

The projectors, loudspeakers, cables, and other technical equipment are an essential part of the installation and should not be hidden. Ideally the room is dimly lit, not completely dark. Depending on the size of the room, the width of the image should be approximately 1,5-2,5 meters or half of the width of the wall. The projection is directly to a white wall, no canvas or screen is needed.
