Nationality: Italian
Sirio Luginbhül was born in Verona in 1937. He lives and works in Padua, where he obtained a Master's degree in Geology. In the 60s he was involved in various avant-garde projects (Visual and Concrete Poetry, happenings and performances), with the Milanese publisher Vanni Scheiwiller, the kinetic art Group N and organised literary events, with the painter Emilio Vedova, the poets Novissivi, Emilio Isgro', the 63 Group. In 1967, at the suggestion of the writer Nanni Balestrini, he made contact with the new Independent Cinema Cooperative (Naples,1967) and the Turin magazine "Ombre Electriche/ Electric Shadows", the co-op's official journal .
In 1970 he founded the Padua Independent Cinema Cooperative, co-founded and contributed to Cinema Uno and the Padua University Film Centre, organised events and film programmes to raise awareness and promote experimental and underground cinema and artists' films in Italy and abroad.
In 1974 his book "Underground Cinema Today", was published by Mastrogiacomo and in 1976 he co-wrote with Raffaele Perrotta "Lo Schermo Negato- cronache del cinema italiano non ufficiale" (The Screen Denied - A Chronicle of Non-official Italian Cinema) published by Shakespeare & Co. (Since 1968 he has produced and directed forty works on 8mm, 16mm and video. In 1980 he wrote one of the first publications on video art, in collaboration with Paolo Cardazzo, "Videotape, arte, tecnica, storia" published by Mastrogiacomo. In 1991 he organised "L'objectif perturbé"
His work has been extensively represented at major festivals, including the Paris Biennale, 1973, the Knokke-Heist Festival,1974, the Festival de la Rochelle, 1976, the Venice Biennale, 1978, the Retrospective of Italian Artists' Cinema at the Pompidou Centre in Paris in 1978, the Lille Festival, 1979, the Figueira da Foz Festival, 1993, the 5th Biennale of Films on Art, Paris,1996, l'Image Légère, Palermo, 1998, the Rome Jubilee, 2000 and Siena Visionnaire 2000.
