ACTS OF LIGHT : RATE OF CHANGE

by Bill BRAND
1972 / 16mm / color / sound / 1S / 18' 00

Rate of Change is the first film in a trilogy titled Acts of Light (1972-74). These works explore human color perception, the system of color production in the photographic emulsion, the physical qualities of the emulsion and base, the laboratory methods of producing and reproducing prints, and the ordering system of successive individual frames that create the illusion of motion and the passage of time.
This film has no original, no frames, only slow continuously shifting colors, cycling around the perimeter of the spectrum. The changes are so slow as to be unseen, yet they alter perception of the color.
