L'ANGE AMAZONIEN : UN PORTRAIT DE LENA VANDREY

by KLONARIS / THOMADAKI
1987-1992 / Super 8mm / color-b&w / sound / 1S / 92' 00

"The works of Lena Vandrey which are on display at the Museum of Art Brut in Lausanne, acquired by Dubuffet, are effigies of women, goddesses, amazons, powerfully expressive totemic characters. They are made from very raw materials. This is no illusionist painting. There is a dramatic tension that destroys the representational system to create a much more physical contact with the object." - Michel Thévoz

A voyage through poetic and autobiographical texts of Lena Vandrey. The artist speaks of her roots, of her philosophy, of her path as a painter, of her techniques. We see her working, we enter into her world: her studio, her paintings, her collections, her living space, the landscape of the Gard region that inspires her.
This film portrait was born from two events: Lena Vandrey's encounter with our cinematographic world and our encounter with her pictorial world, her space and her collection of dolls. Intersections of imaginations and mythologies: the South, origins, a search of "Greekness", the quest for the magical potential of the image, the feminine as a "love force". Intersections of artistic gestures: one on the canvas, the other on cinematographic and photographic material. We invited the artist to become a body-painting, a filmed painting. We staged her texts, her paintings, her objects, her space. An attempt to reveal her as an incarnation of her own mythology.
