Ashish Avikunthak is an Indian avant-garde filmmaker, film theorist, archaeologist, and cultural anthropologist. His films have been the subject of more than a dozen retrospectives, eighteen solo shows, and screenings at major film festivals, galleries, and museums worldwide. He was named Future Greats 2014 by Art Review. Notable screenings include Tate Modern, London (2006), Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris (2006, 2008, 2011), Taipei Biennial (2012), Shanghai Biennial (2014), Locarno Film Festival (2007, 2011), International Film Festival Rotterdam (2007, 2011, 2021, 2023, 2024, 2026), and Berlin International Film Festival (2008, 2017), among many others. Retrospectives of his work have been held at MUBI (2021–22), Wolf Kino, Berlin (2019), Pungent Film Series, Athens (2018, 2026), Bard College (2015), Rice University (2014), Signs Festival, Trivandrum (2013), Festival International Signes de Nuit, Paris (2012), Yale University (2008), Les Inattendus, Lyon (2006) among other locations. In 2011, he was shortlisted for the Skoda Prize for Indian Contemporary Art. He is the author of Bureaucratic Archaeology: State, Science and Past in Postcolonial India, published by Cambridge University Press in 2021. His film work produced over thirty years has been the subject of the edited volume The Epistemic Archaeology of Ashish Avikunthak: Cinema and Religiosity of Everyday Life (Bloomsbury Academic, 2025), which examines the intellectual and cinematic significance of his practice. He holds a PhD in Cultural and Social Anthropology from Stanford University and has previously taught at Yale University. He is currently Professor in Film and Media at the Harrington School of Communication, University of Rhode Island.
