Dr. William Moritz (1941-2004) was a world-renowned expert on animation, experimental film and visual music, and authored more than 100 articles, chapters and program notes plus a book about Oskar Fischinger. Moritz was also a filmmaker, poet and translator. Born May 6, 1941 in Williams, Arizona, Moritz was raised in Arizona and Southern California. He taught at institutions including University of Southern California, CalArts, Occidental College and others. His own 34 films have screened at institutions worldwide such as museums in Paris, Amsterdam, Stockholm and Tokyo.
Moritz worked with the Oskar Fischinger films and papers for over 30 years, traveling often to present programs internationally. He also worked closely with James Whitney before James' death. In 1993, Moritz was honored with a lifetime achievement trophy for service to Visual Music by the Royal Academy of the Netherlands.
