In 1939, a second unit filmed scenes at the Lincoln Memorial for the Hollywood classic Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. The slow-paced rushes undermine the usual cinematic narration; no plot is moving forward here. The neoclassical architecture serves merely as a backdrop for a repetitive ritual in which an inconspicuous protagonist wanders lost between the columns of the hall. Sometimes he stands motionless in the face of the monumental Lincoln, as if he himself had frozen into a statue.
