Bilingual edition of an exhibtion catalogue (’13/’14) presenting an inventory of Taanila’s key works from the past ten years. Film-maker and artist Mika Taanila’s art dwells in an intermediate zone between documentary film and experimental video. To some he is charting the utopias of yesteryear, to others he appears as a guide on a nostalgic tour, albeit not of the sentimental kind. Taanila’s documentaries, films and video installations adopt shifting perspectives in analysing how technology has become an epicentre of contemporary society. Many of Taanila’s works involve the recycling of obsolete technology, popular music excerpts and even segments from some of his own films. This book presents notes on his works, features excerpts from conversations with the artist, a commentary (by Olaf Möller), a biography and bibliography.
