VAGUES À COLLIOURE

by Jean-Michel BOUHOURS
1991 / 16mm / color / sound / 1S / 6' 00

In the summer of 1914, Collioure was a small, quiet fishing village, sheltered from the convulsions of a burning Europe. Matisse painted a curious picture Window Door in Collioure.
Homage to Collioure, wink to the cubists, reference to Matisse; offering to the wind and the sea.
The furious Tramontane sends you its rumblings in spasms in the air which has become crystalline. The sea is unleashed under the effect of the wind, that suddenly desert the various small boats; SOS for the imprudent. The big breakers make the happiness of the children on the beach.
"Nothing, this foam, virgin towards
To point out only the cup;
Such far drowns a troop
Of mermaids hand in reverse." Stéphane Mallarmé.

A new version of the film whose the original sound track has been replaced by a new music composed by Jean-Philippe Feiss was created in 2020.
