THE JFK PUPPET ASSASSINATION

by Ian HELLIWELL
2014 / Video / color / sound / 1S / 8' 05

A performance and film conceived by Ian Helliwell for the 50th anniversary of the John F. Kennedy assassination. To mark the occasion he organised a programme for the Cinecity film festival, at the Basement venue in Brighton on November 22nd 2013. The culmination of the evening was a recreation of the assassination with puppetry, props and sound.
Teresa Grimaldi made and operated JFK, Jonathan Swain built the limousine and John Hiom painted the backdrop.
This video document of the performance opens with Helliwell's tape loop, and finishes with the powerful words of Canadian prime minister Lester Pearson. The soundtrack was created first as an audio collage with vocal extracts, sound effects, tape loops, electronics and radio sounds. This provided the foundation to which the actions of the puppet were closely choreographed.
