GROSS ANATOMIES

by Martin ARNOLD
2010-2015 / Video / color / sound / 1S / 24' 09

« The dismembered body parts that twitch and gesticulate throughout Martin Arnold’s cartoons suggest a fantastic practice in gross anatomy. Gross anatomy traditionally proceeds by means of the dissection and analysis of cadavers. It aims to produce a cumulative, generalized knowledge of the morphological structures and relations of distinct components to the whole functioning body. Arnold’s cartoons generate a slightly perverse anatomical atlas of phantom limbs, phantasmatic bodies, and dynamic corpuses that emphasizes the contingency and porosity of bodies. They engage with conceptualizations of animation in the multiple senses of the word: as the animistic endowment of inert matter with a semblance of life; as a form of automation; and as a set of techniques for producing moving images and their specific technical, aesthetic, and industrial histories. » - James Leo Cahill
