RUGS (or the Art of surprising yourself with your eyes in the carpet).
When I was a child, my mother, faced with my melancholic, angry and paranoid attitude (...), enrolled me at the DECROLY center in Lille to consult a psychologist….
From the first session, I was subjected to a parade of RORSCHARCH psychological tests.
Nearly 45 years later and having seen Stan BRAKHAGE's painted films ("Persian Séries"... among others), I undertook research on this theme and after having made a few drawings folded in 2,4,6,8...
Also, I had fun rotating inked stencils on watercolor paper with successive inkings.
Then I took one of my 16mm films hand painted on color negative and transparent film then printed in silver color positives ("Inks" 2003-2010).
Then a telecine of the film thus produced was carried out (image transfer from the film to digital or analog video).
Then, I separated the film into 4 files: A, B, C, D. A = original film, B = original film with "flipped" effect, C = film "rotated" from bottom to top, B = "original film" with flipped and rotated effect from top to bottom...
Finally, I made the following combinations in superimpositions A+B, C+D, A+B+C+D.
It is this combination: (A+B)+(C+D) which was chosen for the editing of this hybrid video.
The cinematograph became an interface between the painter's gesture and digital animation video.
Experimental cinema is the art of surprising yourself with your eyes in the carpet...
