SLEEPWALKING

by Danwen XING
2001 / DVD / color-b&w / sound / 1S / 10' 00

The film version is about 10 minutes long, projectedfull size on a wall in a individual dark space. The visual of this piece shows images from New York, the city where i have lived, but it is accompanied with the music of chinese traditional instruments and the sounds of everyday life in China.

Memory exists in the past, and the present will soon become memory; this work is not about travel, and not just about a personnal experience. It is about DISLOCATION. In this work; i intend to explore how one's mind can begin to blur the distinctions between past and present as well as between reality and fiction.

This film may be read as a comment on how image and sound from East and West can resemble each other and meld together, while at the same time express great cultural differences. On the other level, the work also shows how the mind can take images from different places and weave them together into a seamless world of continuous memory.
