JIMMY'S BALLET

by Jaap PIETERS
1993 / Super 8mm / color / silent / 1S / 3' 00

Observation of a homeless Surinam man, who provides himself with a new task or function over and over again in the street where we both live (he outside & I'm in). In this situation, he 'arranges' the traffic in such an elegant & subtly refined way that it works as a modern ballet. What is astonishing here is the extreme contrasts that the streets (=the world) offer: his role versus his clothing/his looks, his subtleness & beauty in movements & doings versus the chaos of the flow of people & traffic around him. Filmed except for 20 sec. in one take one S8 roll from the same apartment. No sound.
