This exercise borrows a chain motiff found in Amish quilts and Navaho weavings and programs it through 3 cycles, each consisting of 28 drawings. The drawings were backlit to increase color saturation and make the paper translucent, thus permitting a combination of 2 levels. Through this layered variation in orientation and sequence a new wave-like patterns emerge. In its permutive journey a drawing might be photographed right-side-up, upside-down, flipped (positions analogous to the objective manipulation of the film medium itself).
