BLUE PARROT

by Walter UNGERER
2009 / DVCAM / color / sound / 1S / 12' 23

The film is based on material shot on a trip from Maine to Los Angeles; recording movie clips on a digital still camera. The locations include Boston Airport, Getty Museum of Art, an LA shopping mall, and the exhibition/concession stands along Santa Monica Beach. This material is then manipulated and altered in a computer editing system.
Blue Parrot of the title refers to the parrot loose among the patrons of an outdoor restaurant at Venice Beach, which is one attraction among many others along the beach walkway such as a man demonstrating the sounds of a tongue whistle in his mouth, an almost naked man hypnotically gyrating to the music of a steel drum band, a bodybuilder with a silver ball he uses as an implement for his exercises, and an aerial artist performing suspended high above the ground from ropes and colorful cloth material which she has managed to entwine around her body.
This film as with all of Ungerer’s recent work going back to the mid 1990’s, relies on going beyond the surfaces subject matter, as if to say, “Don’t be fooled by the world you see. It’s only an illusion you have created”.
