EXHIBITION: AUDIENCE RESPONSE

by Richard SQUIRES
2005 / DVCAM / color / sound / 1S / 10' 30

"Exhibition : Audience Response" documents viewers' reactions to Squires' interactive video installation, "Exhibition" during its installation at the Old Operating Theatre Museum, London in 2005. As the audience entered the space, they were confronted by a video image of the artist in a zombie-like stasis, staring blankly and swaying slightly. Reaching a certain proximity to the image, the viewer would trip a sensor and trigger a chain of events whereby the artist screamed, lurched forward and his guts were expelled from his belly. "Exhibition : Audience Response" contrasts the responses of a group of 10 year-old visitors to the museum with a group of adults and culminates in the younger visitors repeatedly tripping the sensor and chanting at the video screen.
