James Cruze (27 Mar 1884 – 3 Aug 1942)
“The director of The Covered Wagon (1923) was a hero of the silent cinema, but his star has virtually vanished. He was one of the fastest filmmakers in the business, and an endearing character who drank too much. Sadly, his most intriguing picture Hollywood (1923), a satire on the film industry with many sequences in the style of Beggar on Horseback, has been lost. –Kevin Brownlow
