The experimental short film OBJET D'ÉNIGME turns commonplace items and areas of a home, such as doors, keys, and rooms, into snippets of a dream, representations of an unsolved mystery, and a quest to discover what words cannot express. Repetition and rotation appear to open doorways to a parallel universe at the edge of dreams and the unconscious, and these elements, which were collected using an iPhone's Lidar scanner, are animated with circular movements that transport the viewer into a mesmerizing vision. The kinescope technology is then used to translate these digital rotations – which have been distorted by the inherent flaws in the scanning process – onto 16mm black-and-white film. The shots, which are enhanced with texture and grain, undergo a significant metamorphosis as a result of this transfer, becoming dreamlike pieces in which each feature carries the palpable mark of the impermanence of matter and time. The film is then reconnected with its digital roots by being digitized in 4K. The film attempts to achieve the dimension of Das Ding, the elusive object of desire that is beyond any representation, by examining the limits between what can be experienced and what is always out of reach through this journey from the digital to the analog and back again. Every image in OBJET D'ÉNIGME turns into a door, allowing the investigation of the line separating dream and reality.
