Isabella HOLLAUF

Nationality: Austrian

Isabella Hollauf was born in 1956 in St. Georgen, Austria. Her work has been showcased at various venues, including the Museum für angewandte Kunst (MAK) in Vienna (2003) and the Vienna Museum (2004). In 2007, her work "Aquarena" was featured at the Diagonale 2007 - Festival of Austrian Film in Graz, Crossing Europe, the Linz Film Festival, "New Austrian Avant-Garde and Experimental Cinema" at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., and the 14th Regensburg Short Film Week.

Hollauf's artistic focus assesses the disappearance of former social utopias. She examines how utopian models of society have steadily lost popularity since the late 1970s and early 1980s, leading to the loss of social pilot projects intended to offer broad access to culture and leisure. These projects, like expansive parks and swimming pools, once expressed a desire for everyone to share in public life and prosperity. Today, most of these open spaces have become derelict, with only a few remaining intact.

Her photographic research explores these evident shifts in value perceptions, revealing the ambitions of past utopias and contrasting them with the grim reality of the present. Her interest extends not only to post-Communist countries but also to others heavily influenced by socialism for decades, such as Austria and Sweden.
