The complexity of the screen experience belies the apparent simplicity of the time-lapse compression of an 858 page classic text into just 9 minutes duration. The book could only be read/filmed during the hours of sufficient winter daylight. Some pages took longer than others to read and throughout the hours of filming regular breaks had to be taken because the studio was exceptionally cold. In these ways, the filmmaker’s agency impinged on an otherwise controlled mechanical system. David Cunningham’s minimalist soundtrack treads a similar fine line between simplicity and complexity to offset and complement the picture. (lux.org.uk)
A witty take on the contingencies of the conditions in which to best read Marx. Filmed over 6 days, the time-lapse technique compresses a classic text (Karl Marx's 'Das Kapital') into a 9 minute experience, raising questions as to how film might transcend verbal language. The picture is offset by David Cunningham’s score which is composed solely from the two words of the book’s title.
