Giuseppe Boccassini is a filmmaker based between Berlin and Italy. After studying Film Theory at the University of Bologna and Film Directing at NUCT Cinecittà in Rome, he developed a body of research centered on found footage, archival practices, and experimental cinema.
His films often engage with the historical and formal dimensions of genre, such as Ragtag (2022), a feature-length collage from over 300 classic noirs, and Desire (2025), a 30-minute work built from melodramas of the 1930s-50s. His recent Blast Furnace (2024) explores industrial cinema as an immersive, phenomenological experience, while his current project Phantom Ride reworks archival footage from early Antarctic expeditions through the lens of the cinema of attractions.
Since 2017, Boccassini has directed FRACTO - Experimental Film Encounter in Berlin, a festival dedicated to experimental cinema across historical and contemporary practices.
His films have screened internationally at major festivals and leading cinémathèques and museums, including the Venice International Film Festival (Biennale Cinema), Pesaro Film Festival, FID Marseille, Ji.hlava IDFF, IndieLisboa (Cinemateca Portuguesa), Torino Film Festival, Image Forum Tokyo (Tokyo's Cinémathèque), the Museum of the Moving Image (NYC) — in conversation with film historian Tom Gunning —, Jerusalem Cinematheque, Cinemateca do MAM (Rio de Janeiro), the Museo Nazionale del Cinema (Turin), and the Museo del Cine Pablo C. Ducrós Hicken (Buenos Aires).
His work is distributed by Light Cone (Paris) and the Film-Makers' Cooperative (New York).
