In the presence of Karola Gramann and Heide Schlüpmann.
Born in Germany in 1933, Margaret Raspé – artist, performer and filmmaker – was influenced by Viennese Actionism and the Fluxus movement, which led her to frequent the Vienna avant-garde circles, all the while pursuing her studies at fine arts academies in Munich and Berlin.
In the 1970s, she developped the « Filme mit dem Kamerahelm » concept by mounting a super8 camera onto a construction helmet, which allowed her to shoot without hands, with the camera placed above her right eye.
This setup allowed her to paint and to carry on everyday activities while filming at the same time.
« … the camera helmet on my head, painting and filming simultaneously. The instrumentalized eye does away with one's frame of reference… I split in two : on one side, the relaxed hand paints in a state of free actionism ; on the other side, concrete and rational observation through the camera viewfinder … »
This screening presents the occasion to encounter a surprising body of work, which has been recently rediscovered and which will include rare and little-known films, specially projected in their original super8 format.
