From its beginnings in the early 1970s, the work of the American filmmaker Peter Hutton (1944-2016) is essentially composed of portraits of cities and landscapes from around the world.
Having joined the merchant navy in his youth, Hutton spent more than forty years traveling around the world, often in the cargo compartment, and transformed these experiences into sublime visual studies, from the Hudson River to the industrial city of Lodz, from the north of Iceland to the coasts of Bangladesh. This is a unique opportunity to discover his films – which are not distributed in France and will be shown in their original 16mm format – of an artist who has dedicated his life to revealing landscapes and sculpting time.
Peter Hutton's tableau-like films unfold in a kind of silent reverie; often, they take the form of a series of still shots, reminiscent of early cinema, of landscape painting traditions and even photography. As Tom Gunning has observed, "these seemingly simple films offer lessons in the art of seeing and fashioning images that make you wonder how anyone could produce something simultaneously so humble and so astounding."
