Screening in the presence of Ben Russell
"The gateway to the invisible must be visible" - René Daumal, Mount Analogue
So assembled in the cinema-dark, we gather our supplies for the ascent, steeling ourselves for the long journey ahead - the summit awaits! As we begin our kino-expedition towards that infinite unknown (aka the future), we are greeted by a spirit guide with their face in close-up, their hand waving mysteriously, their body garbed in a cloth that declares Now to be the most miraculous time of all (VAZ). And so it is. We reorient ourselves and, with cinema as our compass, we transit across a landscape illuminated by strobing light, where we mistake music for motion and inside for out (LAROSE). Geography becomes image! The past leaps forward! Time and space collapses (FISCHINGER)! Caught between surface and projection, our perception distorts - sound replaces sight replaces self as we stumble deeper and deeper into the reeds (HOLT / SMITHSON). Just in "time", our foot catches on a hidden rail as the whistle of a ghost train echoes out - and suddenly we are riding, shuttling forward through a vista of stream and wood and distant mountain peak - one that slowly splinters out into line and form and vibrating color (BREER), that tumbles us outward into a pile of rubble gathered at the mountain's base - or is it summit? Or pyramid (LOS INGRÁVIDOS)? Or self? The only way to know is to climb further, deeper, beyond - to turn the quest inwards, to truly ascend into the Now (ROSE).
Ben Russell
A seven-part program conceived by the American artist, filmmaker and curator Ben Russell as a parallel kino-movement to the multi-screen pilgrimage laid out in his solo exhibition La Montagne Invisible (on display at Le Plateau from 23/01-05/04/2020).
