To mark the publication of the new book L'Émulsion fantastique: le cinéma selon Cécile Fontaine - Entretiens avec yann beauvais, we invite you to an exhibition of Cécile Fontaine’s work at the Galerie Rue Antoine (Paris 75018), from Friday, May 21, to Saturday, May 29, 2021.

The exhibition L’émulsion fantastique proposes an exploration of the creative universe of filmmaker Cécile Fontaine through a variety of materials: installations of original Super 8 and 16mm rolls, slide and film projections, as well as paper collages. In the words of yann beauvais, “Cécile Fontaine turned the film strip into an art object in itself, which to a certain extent could dispense with projection, since the strips were created without knowing what the projected result would be… projection was a necessity but not a priority.” This exhibition is an opportunity to discover the foundations of her work outside of the screening room.
Fontaine exposes the material composition of her films through a large diversity of techniques, often found by accident and then reapplied and explored in various combinations over the years: be it color separation through stripping layers of emulsion, direct exposure of film to light, transfer of film emulsion or magazine images using scotch tape, or submersion of film in household products to alter its texture and color… This exhibition will give a key to understanding the meticulous nature of Fontaine’s creative processes and reveal her singular approach to collage and found footage.

The book will be available for purchase at Galerie Rue Antoine during the period of the exhibition.
The first 50 copies will be offered at a special price of 25 euros
and will each be accompanied by an original film frame by Cécile Fontaine.
This publication is also released as an enhanced e-Book via iBooks/iTunes (EPUB format). This digital edition will give readers the opportunity to go freely between viewing films and images to reading the texts.
