Double screening presented by Federico Rossin
“Strand discovered an extraordinary sensuous lyricism, simultaneously wanton and disciplined.”
David E. James, The Most Typical Avant-Garde
"Chick Strand (1931-2009), joint founder with Bruce Baillie of the Canyon Cinema cooperative in 1961, was a radically pioneering and seminal filmmaker in the West Coast underground, with her poetic combination of documentary elements, ethnographic inquiries (she had a degree in anthropology) and experimental techniques. In the course of her long career, she made several trips to Mexico, making portraits of the people she met around Guanajuato. Strand’s unique camera is always in motion, trying to catch subjects and details in kinetic close-up with a handheld telephoto lens. 'I like to hold the camera next to my body when I'm shooting' she said: her very personal technique - an unmistakable signature - produced highly lyrical and sensual images, and a rigorous renewal of the film portrait and the ethnographic documentary. Strand always refused the label of feminist, insisting that she wasn't interested in politics but instead in her own intuitive and passionate connections to people, light, sound and vision. Her mix of eroticism, intimacy and visual poetry is a joyous hymn to life and women."
