A screening in 16mm presented by Mariya Nikiforova, collection manager at Light Cone, in dialogue with Lucile Combreau, professor and researcher at the Paul Valéry University (Montpellier). This screening is the result of a partnership with UFR 1 and the Film, Audiovisual and New Media Department.
More than just a medium for recording reality, the film strip is a material ready to be engaged with, manipulated, and altered through a multitude of gestures: doodling, painting, erasing, or scratching into the photochemical emulsion, as well as deteriorating it using abrasive products or organic processes. In proposing an overview of these different approaches to working with found footage, this 16mm program highlights how the intersection between figurative imagery and cameraless techniques on the film strip can give rise to new sensory forms with surprising and complex meanings.
