Le Monde Inconnu (The Unknown World) is an experimental adaptation of Journey to the Center of the Earth by Jules Verne by way of various direct animation techniques on the film strip, including the use of a living unicellular organism, the "blob". Going beyond the narrative aspect, the reappropriation of Journey to the Center of the Earth is a way of evoking contemporary issues, especially that of the climate crisis.
The film does not amount to a simple two-way journey to the underground world, but portrays, instead, a dead end: the final landscape in the film is empty and still. There is no trace of life other than that of the blob in this supposedly utopian world. Human life is neither possible on the surface nor below ground, and all that remains to do is contemplate what will survive us.
