Johannes Hammel, born in 1963 in Switzerland, lives and works in Vienna as a director, cinematographer, and producer.
He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, where he has been based ever since. Hammel has focused on filmmaking since the 90s, when he made the well-known Die schwarze Sonne. In 2010, he also directed the independent fiction film Folge mir. In recent years, he has explored a more systematic approach to working with found footage. Alongside his own creative endeavors, he also works as a photographer on independent film projects, is a co-founder of the documentary film production company Navigator Film, and owns the production company Hammel Film.
