Paul-Armand GETTE

(1927-2024)
Nationality: French

Born in 1927, Paul-Armand Gette has, for over sixty years, built a singular and prolific body of work, detached from any artistic trend. Oscillating between art and science, his work unfolds across a variety of mediums including photography, sculpture, painting, video, and literature. His works have been exhibited notably at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Nantes, the Musée Rodin in Paris (in 2011), the Asi Museum in Reykjavik, and at documenta 6 in Kassel in 1977.

More recently, Paul-Armand Gette participated in the exhibition De Mineralis, pierres de visions at the Institut d'art contemporain in 2015, where he presented a series of graphic works, as well as the performance L’autel de l’apothéose des fraises (2005) on the opening night. His work was also the subject of the exhibition Evolution, avec un R c’est encore mieux, at Cap Saint-Fons in 2016, in partnership with Galerie Domi Nostrae, Lyon, and URDLA, Villeurbanne. It was presented at the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, with the exhibition Un Parcours Alicien in 2017. Paul-Armand Gette is also the first artist to have been invited for a residency at Maison Bernard in Théoule-sur-Mer, the bubble-house designed by architect Antti Lovag, which resulted in a publication, the first title of a new collection.

From the 1970s onwards, his work became more specifically articulated around a dual research focus: one dedicated to landscape and the idea of nature, and the other devoted to the study of the model. Each of his obsessions – nature, desire – corresponds to a different mode of investigation and aesthetic choices. He then produced his first "descriptive approaches" based on the rigorous study of ordinary places, combining black and white photographs, drawings, films, videos, and elements collected on site. Approche descriptive d’une plage (1972) highlights his scientific codes and methods while offering a unique perspective that renews our ways of representing a landscape.
