“With the tide ebbs and wave surges, thus named this shore.” In Buddhism, This Shore is the opposite idea of Nirvana, which refers to our mundane world. With such a grand title, the film is a humble home movie indeed, hand-made with the support of my friends and family. Image and narratives were collaged with free association, by retelling the story, representing the unstable nature of memory. Imaginary lines were drawn between these tiny stories, then a constellation emerged vaguely. This film aims to capture some fragments of emotions in this restless, changeable world.
The distance of memory is the distance of diasporas. The making of this film is also a record of my own relocation. Hence, the experience of narration is the experience of migration. Besides the shifting narrative, the collage of heterogeneous text, sounds, and images is a methodology I’ve been counting on. This film employs various image formats: 16mm, Super 8, and digital video. Includes found images like paintings, photos and VHS/Beta home video. Through reassembling and expanding different materials, I want to express another dimension of mobility, across the time-space framing of the moving image.
