As a painter, I have never accepted that any part of the body should be subject to any visual or tactile taboos. I was free to examine the celluloid itself, burning it, baking it, cutting it, painting it, dipping my footage in acid, making dense layers of glue and complex A and B assemblies using only paper clips.
