The film creates a portrait of a coastal landscape based on a canal along the Dutch-German border. Over the course of a year, 34 shots are taken on each bridge of the canal, beginning at sunrise on the winter solstice and ending at sunset on the same day the following year. The montage unfolds a landscape into which the local people have inscribed themselves so conspicuously that the artist Robert Smithson remarked that it is "an earthwork in itself (...)".
