After the Egyptologist Anatole Lacoste's discovery of the tomb of the giant squid Kheptar in Nubia, the neurophysicist Madeleine Varga gained possession of the crystal embedded in the mummified cephalopod's left eye. To demonstrate the crystal’s properties, she has surreptitiously implanted a fragment in one of Lacoste’s teeth. Unknowingly affected by the crystal’s interference with his central nervous system, Lacoste falls asleep while reading the newspaper in the Tuileries Gardens.
