Philippe Cote, born in 1965 in Caen, made around twenty-five films between 1998 and 2016. He was a filmmaker, cinephile, programmer, avid traveler, and one of the founding members of L'Etna, an experimental cinema workshop in Paris. He supported numerous filmmakers through his feedback, his blog, and his programming, which blended experimental and documentary forms. Ten years have gone by since his passing. From 2000 on, his films and his personality left a lasting mark on his generation.
His approach to filmmaking – sensitive yet radical – consisted in experimenting with a medium in constant transformation, through the motifs of the body and interiority and, later, of distant places encountered on his journeys. His connection to an elementary form of cinema, where rhythm, light, and color are essential, led him to employ a variety of techniques: painting on film and other types of cameraless filmmaking, DIY optical printing, and editing and projecting both on film and digitally. His filmmaking shifted, especially over the last decade, toward a radically poetic form of documentary cinema. Its principal theme is the filmmaker's solitary body, who, through the act of filming, experiments with the forms and movements – ripples, cataclysms... – of the matter that he observes and captures.
Philippe Cote was a filmmaker with a profoundly humble gaze, inspired by both abstract cinema and anthropological documentary. The work of Stan Brakhage and, later, that of Peter Hutton, were particularly important in guiding and inspiring him. Beginning by filming himself, he later traveled to Andalusia, Asia, and Canada, drawing closer to distant inner worlds. L'En-dedans, a series of pinhole images created without a camera, brings light and color to the fore as pure elements, apparitions of primordial images. Images de l'eau depicts his own engulfment and rebirth as successive, essential becomings. Va, regarde also takes part in these becomings, moving from the inside out. His body of work constructs a world before language, a journey across images toward distant worlds that are hidden, revealed.
