REFLECTING POOL

by Stephanie MAXWELL
2004 / DVCAM / color / sound / 1S / 9' 00

A collaborative work by Stephanie Maxwell and Peter Byrne (image and animation) and Allan Schindler (Music). Sometimes the smallest event can have the most profound repercussions. REFLECTING POOL creates a contemplative but highly charged visual and musical expedition through a cycle of chaos and recovery. The imagery consists of both animated and live action footage which have been transformed and layered in digital post production. The techniques used to create this multilayered work include: painting directly on film which has been hand-manipulated during digital rerecording, object animation, sand animation, and pixillated recordings of changing light reflections and movements of microscopic water creatures. The music for Reflecting Pool is a composition for saxophone and prerecorded tape. The saxophone uses non-traditional playing procedures that extend its color range. The tape adds electronic manipulation to various acoustic sources which include sounds made by the composer's daughters, saxophone, electric guitar and radio static. The tape becomes the anchor for the saxophones improvisations. Reflecting Pool is a collaborative work by the three artists, from concept through realization.
