Stephanie Angela Maxwell is an animator, filmmaker and professor in the School of Film and Animation at the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, New York. She has created a large body of award winning film works that are stunningly beautiful and unique.
Stephanie has specialized in hand-painted, direct-on-film, experimental abstract animation, and her two most recent films are live action ocean portraits that were created with the eye and understanding of an animator. The techniques of her works are wide ranging, and include: direct-on-film painting and etching, motion painting, object animation, copier techniques, and live action manipulations. Most of her works are collaborations with composers.
Stephanie Maxwell's award-winning works have been presented on many international festivals and film programs. She has also lectured and conducted workshops on a variety of topics worldwide, including:
- Experimental animation
- Direct-on-film (cameraless) animation
- Len Lye and direct-on-film artists
- Abstract animation
- Light and motion in animation
- Live action filmmaking with the sensibility of an animator
- Collaborative, inter-disciplinary arts (and science!) hybrid filmmaking, or cinema-related projects
- True Collaboration, which she defines as "a working concept for collaborative, interdisciplinary projects where all collaborators initiate and define the project idea and simultaneously work on the idea with consultation and/or interaction during the development of the project through the completion of the project."
Stephanie was co-founder and co-director of the ImageMovementSound festivals, an annual festival of collaborative productions by interdisciplinary artists and universities, 1997-2008.
Stephanie grew up on the U.S. West Coast and has a background in marine biology and extensive underwater diving. The ocean has taught her about movement, gravity, light, other worlds and spaces, and the beauty and amazing strangeness in our physical and emotional encounter with the world.
