SHORT FILM SERIES (BARN + CYCLE + CHIMNEY + CAT + REFLECTION)

by Guy SHERWIN
1977-1978 / 16mm / b&w / silent / 1S / 15' 00

BARN (1978, 3' 00)
The question of whether to expose the film for interior or exterior is resolved by taking two frames alternately at each exposure. These two extremes of exposure are gradually reduced to a mid-position in a sequence that repeats in waves. This is a time-lapse film as well as a kind of 'flicker' film.

CYCLE (1978, 3' 00)
Cycling in circles through a puddle of water. Wet trails dry in the sun as shadows arc around me.

CHIMNEY (1977, 3' 00)
Shot from a train approaching Birmingham New Street Station. I zoom the lens slowly toward the chimney as it moves away. The landscape appears to revolve around the chimney.

CAT (1977-1978, 3' 00)
Time-accelerated film of a cat slipping in the sun on the corrugated plastic roof of our garden shed.

REFLECTION (1997-1998, 3' 00)
A film palindrome. The image of a tree and its reflection is printed twice, superimposed, the second time upside-down and backwards. A very slow cross-fade is made between the two layers of film. Surprisingly, a little coot, seen at both ways of the film, appears each time to be the right way up.
