Nicolas Droin is a Senior Lecturer in Cinema at Paris 8 University. He authored a thesis titled "Landscape and Disorientation in the Work of Michelangelo Antonioni." His research focuses on spaces, places, and landscapes in cinema and the arts, as well as on modern and contemporary cinematic forms.
He has published a book dedicated to Gus Van Sant's Paranoid Park and has contributed to several collective works emphasizing the relationships and hybridities between cinema and other art forms. Echoing and linking with this research, he has directed numerous films, ranging from essays to fiction and documentaries.
He initiated and co-directs, with Prosper Hillairet, two film series: a documentary series about film and surrealism historian Alain Virmaux (Alain Virmaux, archiviste du feu), and a film series on Paris (Lignes). His current research explores the relationships between writing, gestures, and representations of the city in cinema (Ecrire la ville au cinéma), as well as formal, narrative, and political "interstices" in cinema and the arts.
