He attended the Black Mountain Experimental College, where he met the architect Buckminster Fuller and the composer John Cage. From 1955 to 1965, he made his first films mainly from paintings and collages of images found in art magazines and journals. During this period, he did not hesitate to ironically mix up the body parts of characters, sometimes politicians (BREATHDEATH, 1964), or to combine classical and modern paintings. In some of his films, he also used brush painting and drawn calligraphy (MANKINDA, 1957). In the late 50s and early 60s he recorded performances by Claes Oldenburg (SNAPSHOTS OF THE CITYS, 1961) and Allan Kaprow. He then collaborated with dancers such as Merce Cunningham and Yvonne Rainer. He created shows for the Movie-Drome, a domed theatre he had built to host multiple-projector sessions. He is one of those artists who nurture the hope that the satellite will weave simultaneous links between people. With this utopian goal in mind, he worked as artist-in-residence at WGBH. In 1966, he worked with Ken Knowlton at Bell Telephone Laboratories. There he made new animated films using a computer and experimented with the hologram technique. He has received numerous awards from well-known institutions such as the Rockefeller Foundation, the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts.
