Rodolphe COBETTO-CARAVANES

(1970- )
Nationality: French

From a very young age, he showed a strong inclination for drawing and was initially destined for comic strips. However, at 15, he founded his first rock band and pursued an Arts Plastiques (Visual Arts) track in high school, while also creating various fanzines. His band, Rock Ze Toothbrush (in 1986), made a lasting impression; no one seemed to know how to play, but the audience kept asking for more. In parallel, Caravanes released a first compilation titled "Le Nain Jaune," dedicated to Reims rock, which enjoyed a very localized mini-success. He learned to play (bass) by joining the pop band Happy Droopy Boys, played in other formations simultaneously, and then moved to Paris.

There, in 1990, he was admitted to the UFR d'Arts Plastiques & Sciences de l’Art at Paris 1 (Panthéon-Sorbonne), where he discovered the practice of cinema, becoming a student of Stéphane Marti (the paragon of experimental Super 8). He also attended classes taught by Deke Dusinberre, Bernard Roué, and Michel Journiac, three important artists/professors for his training. He then made his first films.

In 1994, his work with images attracted record labels, and he began directing music videos for bands like Diabologum, Mendelson, and Sebadoh (founded by Lou Barlow). These encounters led him to cross paths with the Lithium label (Dominique A, Diabologum, Mendelson, Programme, etc.), where he released his first record, a single by his band Acapulco Laps.

In parallel, he continued to experiment with other film forms. His short films were regularly shown at institutions like the Cinémathèque française, at festivals, or as opening acts for "major films" around the world. His latest creation, RADIO CITY ONE (2009), is a film that leans towards a feature length, presented as a cine-concert with his rock band FIASCO. He also managed (from its creation until 2010) the experimental cinema distribution association Braquage with Élodie Imbeau, Sébastien Ronceray, and Gaël Jaudeau.
