ROSE BY ROSE LOWDER

In Rose by Rose Lowder, an enhanced eBook published under the direction of Scott Hammen by Light Cone Editions, Rose Lowder explains her unique approach to the film image and shares her experiences over almost half a century of creative work. Her texts are accompanied by extracts she has selected from each of her films as well as an essay by critic and curator Enrico Camporesi of the Centre Pompidou in Paris.

Rose Lowder is one of the most important contemporary artists working in film. She has made more than forty 16mm films, most of them painstakingly composed frame-by-frame in the camera. Working primarily in spectacularly beautiful natural environments in France, Italy, and Switzerland, she has developed a personal visual language that expresses both the beauty of the landscape around her and the magic of cinematic vision.

Lowder’s work is in the permanent collection of numerous museums (Musée national d’art moderne, MoMA, Art Gallery of Ontario) and has been the subject of frequent retrospectives (Art Institute of Chicago, California Institute of the Arts, Tate Modern, Cinémathèque française).

Rose by Rose Lowder also contains an introduction to Lowder’s work by Tara Merenda Nelson, the Curator of Moving Image Collections at the Visual Studies Workshop, and a complete filmography and bibliography.

Rose par Rose Lowder is an interactive edition allowing the reader to move seamlessly between viewing and reading. Available in English or French (EPUB) on iBooks/iTunes.
