Light Cone holds some 6000 films by over 800 filmmakers in its collection. A great number of these films are regularly rented by cinemas, festivals, museums and universities, circulating all over the world. However, there are also many films in our catalog that are rarely seen on the big screen and remain unknown to programmers and the public. This program, conceived as part of the festivities around Light Cone’s 40th anniversary, aims to explore and reevaluate these works. Here, we present fourteen films on Super8 and 16mm in order to highlight the work of several artists who have remained on the periphery of a certain history of experimental cinema and its curating practices.
Brought together by a process close to free association, the films presented here reveal, nonetheless, several recurring motifs. The program confronts us with the cinematic illusion, inviting us to question our perception of the projected image and to observe its deconstruction. And yet, far from being purely conceptual exercises, the films explore the notion of self-representation and bring to the fore the subjectivity of the artist. The accent is placed on the internal, intimate experience, as several of the films are anchored in the imaginary of personal cinema, often associated with the analog “small gauge” formats, Super8 and 16mm: (self-)portrait films, home movies, erotic diaries, travelogues. Diverse experimental techniques allow the filmmakers, using skilful and elegant gestures, to transform their images into polysemic forms full of melancholy and longing. Time stops. The attentive eye captures every minute detail. Supernatural colors overlap in an overabundance of emotion. And sometimes, we laugh.
