"The study of metallurgical rites has demonstrated the survival, in Occidental alchemy, of very ancient telluric beliefs: myths of divine fire and of the earth mother."
— Michel Caron et Serge Hutin, Les alchimistes, 1959.
"Locked up here, in this purely telluric glen, with just the rare specks of diatoms on the granite screes, and all the rest is stone in all of its varieties."
— Jean Giono, Poids du ciel, 1938.

This program titled Κοσμογονία [cosmogonia], which literally signifies "the birth of the cosmos", is composed of a series of films that are crescendoing variations on the complex of myths about the origin of the universe, its laws and evolution. The motif of primordial waters is a recurrent symbol for all ancient civilizations and cultures where water represents the origin of things: the Bible, as well as the Egyptian, Hindu and Greek mythologies associate the image of water to the ideas of birth, rebirth and purification. In these mythologies, the motif of the sacred mountain is equally present and often associated with that of water, as the path that connects the sky to the earth, the mountain on which one lives in contact with the gods. To represent the myth of creation and origin, we descend into the depths of the visible in search of a revelation, diving into the materiality of film until we lose our bearings, then, we rise to the summits of perception, and the program becomes an initiatory journey, an attempt to touch telluric forces with our eyes. Ἀποκατάστασις [apokatastasis] literally means "the restitution or restoration of the universe to its primordial or original state". This foundational myth is linked with the doctrine of the eternal return: when the stars will realign themselves as they were at the beginning of the universe, a great conflagration will take place, and time and the world will commence a new cycle (palingenesis, or "rebirth, regeneration"). At the end of time, when fire will have annihilated the world, universal redemption will come, and all creatures will be brought back into the divine plenitude, dissolving in it and returning to their primordial state. Fire and destruction are thus not definitive, but purifying. After the destruction by fire and the transformation of matter into dust and ash, the world will return to water, the origin of life. Matter and memory, history and metaphysics become, in these films, elements of an alchemical experiment on the visible. From dystopia to utopia. (F.R)
